Location: Original clump in kitchen garden, divided in 2016 and moved to both sides of driveway near vernal pool; next to the mini chicken coop; Lower Redwall garden; potted remainder

Origin: Japan


  • Beardless perennial
  • Grows in slowly expanding clumps 2-4′ tall
  • Blooms (early to mid summer) are great for cutting


  • Butterfly attractor
  • Filter gray water


  • Divide rhizomes every 3-4 years
  • 2 inches water per week


  • Not water dwellers, but prefer moist, acidic ground
  • Full sun to part shade

Zone: 4 to 9
